The Class of ’79 Remembers

For the past few months we have spent hours of time putting together our 40th class reunion with hopes it will be an enjoyable experience for all. While we were planning and preparing all the details, the idea of a “class project” surfaced; one with the goal to leave the Milford community with something the entire class can be proud of knowing that we made a difference in the lives of others. In the year 1979, new doors were opened for most of us, but for the families of James Capps, Alan Piatt, Wayman Nixon and Paul Edgar, only tragic scars were left.

While we were just about to move on to the next chapter in our lives, these four young National Guardsmen, protecting our freedoms, tragically lost their lives in a Army National Guard helicopter, as it exploded in the air and crashed in a new subdivision just off of Wards Corner. Does it ring a bell? To some of you it may. We know four families where that bell rings in their minds every single day. We have located and are in communication with family members of all four soldiers.

This tragedy occurred on September 29, 1979 less than a mile from Paxton Ramsey Park. To honor these soldiers, Miami Township has given their support to place a memorial boulder with a bronze plaque and four engraved park benches with each guardsmen’s name in Paxton Ramsey Park off Price Road which was directly underneath the explosion. Furthermore the township has allowed us to provide a ceremony with the help of the Honor Guard of the Ohio National Guard at 12:00 pm Sunday September 29th, 2019, on the 40th anniversary of the tragedy. We would like to assist the families of these lost soldiers in traveling from Birmingham Alabama and Harrisburg Pennsylvania with travel expenses. The township trustees will be on hand at the ceremony to present each family with a framed proclamation for their sacrifice.

We need your help to make sure this community never forgets these names or this tragic event. Until now, nothing has been done to honor these heros. We have laid the groundwork to petition the Miami Township Trustees to give these soldiers a TRUE memorial…as history has seem to have forgotten them in our community….Until now…40 years later.

We ask your support with our class project to make sure these soldiers will never be forgotten again. You can help in these ways: We need financial support to help with the cost of the boulder, benches, travel and ceremony expenses. Donations can be made payable to “Milford Class of 1979 Memorial” and sent to 5654 Harvest Ridge Drive, Milford Ohio 45150. You can also make a donation online at . You also might know someone who might also like to make a donation to such a worthy cause. Please help us get the word out about this memorial project. We also want you to help honor these soldiers with your presence at the ceremony at Paxton Ramsey Park on September 29, 2019 at 12:00 pm. Please bring your family and encourage others to join us as we celebrate the sacrifice of these four National Guardsmen.

Please help us make sure that these names will never be forgotten again as we ask you for support in our Class Project.
